Archives Card Catalog

The archives collection contains manuscript material including papers of individuals and families such as letters, diaries, and reminiscences; records of clubs, societies, businesses, and institutions, including minute books, account books, and correspondence; and records of some local government agencies, including court records, tax records, licenses, and voter registrations.

The Archives Card Catalog provides extensive indexing of the archival collections. This old-style catalog contains approximately 100,000 cards that index the archival collections to varying degrees by personal names, corporate names, place names, and subject headings.

The Early St. Louis Archives Card Index (also known as the St. Louis Recorded Archives Card Index) was compiled by the W.P.A., and includes approximately 9,500 cards. These cards index official documents of the French and Spanish colonial government in St. Louis, dated circa 1760s-1804, by personal names. Types of documents indexed in this card index include slave sales, land sales, marriage records, wills, estate inventories, and witnesses to legal proceedings.

The Archives Card Catalog and the Early St. Louis Card Index are available at the Library and Research Center. These two catalogs are not accessible online or in any electronic form. To consult these catalogs, visit the Library and Research Center or contact the archives at or (314) 746-4510 (during open hours).
